John Cranford

Managing Editor for Enterprise Reporting

Congressional Quarterly

John Cranford has worked for more than three decades as a reporter and editor, much of that time covering economics and government fiscal and monetary policy.

After graduating from college in 1974 and taking a succession of jobs as a reporter, writer and editor, Cranford joined Congressional Quarterly in 1984. He served as CQ's economics editor for three years before becoming senior economics writer. He covered banking and securities issues during the stock market crash of 1987 and its aftermath, and the savings and loan and banking crises of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is the author of Budgeting for America, a 1989 book on U.S. federal budget policy, published by Congressional Quarterly.

Cranford left CQ in 1996 and for six years was senior economics editor at Bloomberg News, managing coverage of the Federal Reserve, and of economic policy and developments broadly. He returned to CQ in 2003 and currently serves as managing editor for enterprise reporting and writes a weekly column called Political Economy.
