Creating an AI Bill of Rights Is a Distraction

The impulse to compare Big Tech to big government is hard to resist. Many see tech companies as the new Leviathans. So it’s tempting to welcome the White House’s proposal to create a bill of rights for artificial intelligence to enshrine new individual freedoms as a hedge against technology companies’ immense power (“A global AI bill of rights is desperately needed,” Financial Times Opinion, October 12; and FT View, October 19).

But as Hodan Omaar writes in a letter to the editors of the Financial Times, it is an idea premised on a misunderstanding of how power is deployed in America.
