ITIF Welcomes FCC-NTIA Initiative on Spectrum Management

February 15, 2022

WASHINGTON—Following today’s announcement about the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) launching a new initiative to improve U.S. government coordination on spectrum management, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the leading think tank for science and technology policy, released the following statement from Joe Kane, director of broadband and spectrum policy at ITIF:

This joint initiative is a positive step toward diverse uses of spectrum working in harmony. The agencies have pledged tangible steps to increase communication and cooperation, which should reduce the tensions and last-minute objections that have led to friction in the past.

It is also encouraging that the agencies will focus on technical collaboration and evidence-based standards; this will supplement the expertise of each agency and better enable positive-sum solutions to potential interference conflicts.

A renewed Memorandum of Understanding between the agencies and a national spectrum strategy is a good way to show full federal government agreement on a future of maximizing spectrum productivity rather than regulatory turf wars.
