Recommendation

Congress should quadruple the budget for the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC) to fund SME digital upgrading.

Details

Advanced manufacturing has fallen in the United States, and manufacturing productivity has reached levels below 2009. New technologies, termed “smart manufacturing,” can boost SME productivity by up to 50 percent, but adoption by small manufacturers is low. To stimulate SMEs’ uptake of these technologies, Congress should quadruple the current $50 million budget for the Energy Department’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC) to accelerate SME digital upgrading.
